A little package of excitement arrived at my doorstep this morning…. Yes! My Spoonflower fabric swatches have finally arrived! They seemed extra precious as I have been waiting for more than 2 months just to hold them in my hands. The first package probably scooted off during their trip halfway round the globe and Spoonflower was very nice to reprint the swatches and have them FedEx at no additional fee.
My first reaction to the fabrics were that the colours looking less bright than those on my screen . Quoting from Spoonflower.. “Colors can look very different on fabric than they do on your computer monitor. Light goes through and bounces off of color on fabric. Colored light comes out of a screen. Fabric has gossamer qualities: it’s 3-D and it folds and drapes, but screens don’t. Fundamentally different!” Their explanation seems fair.. Despite that, I am still pretty happy with how it turns out as the colours did not deviate too much from my expectations. 🙂
My “aviation” fabric was Spoonflower’s top ten in August’s weekly contest and I have already sold a few yards since then. The current version on sale holds 4-6 planes on a 8″ x 8″ swatch and is suitable as blanket for boys. I am also happy to add my pomegranate design to the line and I am sure it’ll look pretty in anyone’s kitchen 🙂

It’s super exciting isn’t it Sylvia! I had the same issues with colours – I found they came out more ‘true’ to what I see on screen if I use pantone colours rather than just simple RGB references. No idea why! But your patterns look fab regardless 🙂

Congratulations! My first pack a swatches was exciting. I was pleased with most of them, but found that I would have to buy swatches again to sell one of them that needed color adjusting. I wasn’t expecting that.
Thank you Halahblue! Oh yes, if only they can always turn out exactly the way we want them to be! And there is still much to be explored for me. I plan to try some different types of fabric next time… oh, I just hope I don’t end up buying more than what I have sold in Spoonflower lol! 😉
This is a whole new world for me. I’ve never given much thought to printing my little illustrations on anything other than paper. Now you folks are in a whole other league with beautifully designed textile patterns, and I love hearing about the unique challenges that come with that territory. The fabrics look gorgeous to me. I’m glad you’re happy with them.
Thanks Gabriel and you should give it a try too! I can definitely see some of your illustrations on fabrics. The feel is totally different and I’m sure you will like it. If your mom or girlfriend sews, you could even present them as gifts for christmas 😀
